The HCC Guide to Bibliographic Citations in MLA Format

Some rules to remember:

  • Alphabetize entries in the works cited list by the first word in each citation (author or title);
  • If author's name is unknown, leave it out and list the title first;
  • If several cities of publication are given, use only the first;
  • Italicize titles of books, Web sites, and Database names;
  • Include the words "Print" or "Web" in every citation (other options include "DVD," etc.);
  • In Web citations, use n.p. if no publisher name is listed & n.d. if no publishing date is listed;
  • URLs (Web site addresses) are optional;
  • Use correct punctuation and follow text formatting exactly.
